What We Can Do

There has been a lot of focus these past 10 months on supporting the people of Israel and Israeli soldiers financially. And this is important.

However, there are additional things we can do as well.

We can generate spiritual merit for soldiers and others in dangerous situations by praying and by committing to grow Jewishly.

And as great as a general commitment to improve is, a small specific commitment in the merit of a specific soldier can be that much more compelling. In fact, the website sharejustonething.com was created in the wake of October 7 to allow Jews around the world to make a " kabbalah," a Jewish growth commitment for the protection of a specific soldier. This website campaign has matched over 300,000 Jews worldwide with soldiers and hostages.

One source for this idea is when Moshe drafted men from each tribe to fight Midyan. The words "1000 men" are repeated, the first 1000 represented the combat troops and the second 1000 were generating goodwill with Hashem through prayer and good deeds.

"A thousand for each tribe, a thousand for each tribe, from all the tribes of Israel you shall send into the army."

(Based on the Midrash) Numbers 31:4
