One of the Oldest Prayers in the World
The priestly blessing, "May HaShem bless you and guard you. May HaShem shine His face toward you and be gracious to you. May HaShem lift His face toward you and grant you peace," is one of the oldest prayers in the world. Traditionally this prayer is recited by many every Friday night to bless all their children.
The prayer means the following:
May HaShem increase the good that you have and help you keep it.
May HaShem watch what you are doing and guide your life in a positive way.
Yet if you are deserving of punishment (because He is watching you) may HaShem be forgiving so he can (still) grant you peace.
